CHECK THE ENCODING OF YOUR IMPORT FILE
You are trying to import a CSV file into Shippingbo but you receive the following error:
The csv file to upload must be in UTF-8 format.
This error means that your file is not encoded in UTF-8 format. However, every csv file used in Shippingbo must be encoded in UTF-8 for the import to work.
There are several methods to check the encoding of a document:
Use a text editor that displays the encoding
-
Some editors such as Notepad++ (Windows), VS Code, Sublime Text, or Atom display the detected encoding in the status bar (at the bottom of the window).
-
You can open the file in these editors and check whether they indicate, for example, “ANSI”, “UTF-8”, “UTF-8 BOM” or “UTF-16”, etc.
Use online tools
-
There are websites that let you upload a file and try to identify its encoding
-
A commonly used online service to detect the encoding is:
Simply upload your file and the tool will try to identify the encoding (UTF-8, ISO-8859-1, Windows-1252, etc.).
Examine the special characters in the file
-
Often, an “ANSI/Windows-1252” file will show incorrect accented characters if you open it as UTF-8, and vice versa.
-
If all the accents (é, è, à, etc.) appear correctly in a text viewer set to UTF-8, there is a good chance that the file is really encoded in UTF-8.
